OsmTrails Privacy Policy
Effective Date: March 22, 2025
Here’s how the OsmTrails app and OsmTrails.com website handle your data.
Data Collection and Usage
No Data Collection on Website: OsmTrails.com doesn’t store or collect user data and doesn’t support logins.
Local Data Storage: The OsmTrails app keeps all data on your device. No data is shared with third parties unless you choose to share it via your device’s email or messaging apps.
Specific Data Stored:
- GPS Track Data: GPS coordinates and optional hiking start-stop times, stored locally.
- Email Addresses (Optional): Stored locally if you add them for sharing GPS tracks via email.
- Phone Numbers (Optional): Stored locally if you add them for sharing locations via text.
- Cell Tower Signal Strength Data (Optional): Saved locally if you record signal measurements.
Sharing Data: Sharing happens only through your device’s email or messaging apps when you choose to send GPS tracks or locations. Using pre-downloaded map files means no web requests reveal your location as you request map tiles.
Data Storage and Deletion
All data stays on your device. You can remove it by:
- Using the “RESET TRACKS DB” button to erase GPS tracks and signal strength data.
- Managing and deleting email addresses or phone numbers in the app.
- Deleting individual exported or imported GPS tracks on their pages.
- Uninstalling the app to remove all data automatically.
Check our User Data Deletion page for more details.
Information Security
Your app data stays on your device. Map file downloads from OsmTrails.com are logged by Amazon Web Services (AWS) with your IP address for billing the developer.
Links to Other Apps
You can tap the arrow icon in the app on the MAP page (bottom left) to open other mapping apps on your device at the current map location. No personal data is shared unless you send it via your device’s sharing features.
Children’s Privacy
Since OsmTrails doesn’t collect data, there’s no risk of gathering information from children under 13.
Third Party Services
The app doesn’t use third-party services that collect personal information.
Google Play Store does record whether you have purchased a map. The app queries Google's website to verify any purchase (or redeemed promo codes).
Google adds may display on main page of the OsmTrails Lite version. This requires data requests to Google's web sites. My guess is that they also include your location in those requests. There are no adds on the non-Lite version.
Changes to this Policy
We may update this policy occasionally. Changes take effect when posted here. Check back periodically. I may someday finish a live-tracking feature, and include it here or in some other similar app.
